my Twenties

My junior year in college, Angie and I moved into our first apartment together down in St. Paul. It was a great year. We had many friends and even had a foreign exchange student spend the summer with us. As we grew closer, I proposed in a not so romantic fashion, but she still said “yes”. We got married back in 1999.

But it didn’t last long. We were both so young and as we finished college and grew into the people we’ve become, we grew apart. Two years later we divorced.

I had been living with a college roommate while Angie went to law school out in Madison. (The long distance thing obviously didn’t work out so well either.) And about a year before the divorce, I’d gotten my own place in Uptown by myself. It was me and the three cats.

I spent a long time getting past that point. From - ahem - making up for lost time between the sheets, to re-discovering who I really was. Life became entirely enjoyable and by the time 2003 rolled around, I was on top of the world. And that’s where this site starts so if you’ve bothered to read this far and really still give a shit, then by all means, read on…

Go back to the beginning and read through the blog cause the story starts there and goes to now.

But again, here are a few highlights:

  • Swing dancing down at Lee’s Liquor Lounge. Especially Wednesday nights with Miss Kitty and Trailer Trash.
  • Starting work as a machinist at the same place I still work now. That was back in 1997. Wow. It quickly became apparent to me that experience was worth 100 times more than a degree and it became my focus.
  • Inventing the Tredsled with Randy Harney and taking it through to production with Roger’s Athletics Company. It was one hell of a learning experience to start and run a manufacturing business from scratch. The two of us had to do it all: from patents to license agreements and prototypes to mass production.
  • Discovering my singing voice and becoming a Nyes regular back when Jon De Vaal was their pianist. Friendships forged then are still strong today and I count them amongst my closest friends.
  • A number of doomed relationships that ran out their time. But — they taught me a lot about myself and expanded my network of friends exponentially. Most of these people are still my friends and I’m very happy to know that relationships can die gracefully and friendships can survive that. Sometimes.
  • Traveling abroad: back in 2003, it seems I was going everywhere. Trips all over the US and then Bamberg, Germany and Stockholm, Sweden. I miss the adventures and hope to travel a lot more soon. Look back into the gallery to see all of my travels.
  • Creating the White Trike. Which is the whole reason goobertech exists. There was so much attention to the tricycle, that I figured I ought to create a website for it. With the Rabbit’s help, we created the first version of goobertech. Many years later and through quite a learning curve, I’ve gone from html and Frontpage to php and Drupal. Goobertech now has a tax ID number and its own hosting server and I’ve created about 50 websites for various folks — most of whom I also host. See the web design page for a few examples.

Well, it may have taken you awhile to put it all down but good job! I really enjoyed reading a few more tidbits about the funny, friendly guy I know.

My camera is fancy and takes cool pics of you and all kinds of stuff. Look for your captured likeness in my gallery and peek at other victims of the camera’s flash.

I have only made but one prayer in my life: “O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.” And God granted it.
