Tests ALL CLEAR

Wednesday, October 31, 2007 - 4:55pm

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus—and he delivered our Christmas present early this year!!! The test results from the bone marrow biopsy, bone scans and x-rays weren’t in yet when we met with Linda Madsen RNCNP. We were on the way home when she called us with the results of the bone scans and x-rays—ALL CLEAR!! No signs of cancer in any of them. The bone marrow biopsy results related to Hodgkin’s takes about 2 weeks to get back, but since the scans were all clear, there is really no doubt but that the bone marrow will be also. read more »

Pug-O-Ween

Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 10:36pm3 comments

Today after Brunch with Bob was Pug-O-Ween. The folks from Monkey in a Dryer let us into this high secret society of pugs and their owners.

With Bob in tow, we showed up with Sid in his Yoda outfit. You have no idea how many safety pins it took to keep it on him — even with Mom’s custom alterations. Boy was he anxious to be put down and meet the other pooches running around. In all there were about a 100 other pugs there. All in costume and busy saying hello to each other “head to tail”.

Sid wasted no time running up to each and every pug he could find. He was so busy meeting new friends, I think he forgot he was tangled up in a Yoda outfit. (Although the ears sure didn’t last long.) It was a riot to watch all the pugs chasing and running and eating and sniffing. Definitely a pug free-for-all. Mira had just as much fun chasing the pugs, hugging them and meeting all the fellow owners. There were a few baby pugs that garnered most of her attention.

After a couple hours of the dogs running about, the costume contest began and each pug was paraded around the room for the judges. There sure were a lot of cute outfits! Some people really went all out and tortured dressed their pug(s) in outrageous homemade costumes.

Sid won “Honorable Mention” for his Yoda outfit, (really, it was his adorableness, I’m sure.) Andrea’s pugs Ginger and Bentley won first place for their homemade “Fred and Wilma” costumes.

We had so much fun, (especially Sid.) We’ll definitely be showing up for more pug events. There are over a hundred pictures from the day so peek at pugs to your hearts content…

Bec Smith's "Blessing" -- CD Release Show

Friday, October 19, 2007 - 10:39am2 comments

Album art by AlyssA Greening.
Photography by Amelia Clabots.

I haven’t touted a friends talents for awhile. And I have lots of talented friends. But Bec Smith shines out and has some amazing abilities. Piano, guitar, a great voice, and original songwriting creativity were drawn upon to bring us her new album, “Blessing”. Hear samples on her myspace page. She’s put a ton of sweat and tears into this one and the result shows how real effort pays off. Truly amazing, dear.

The album is officially released at tomorrow’s show at Clubhouse Jäger in the Warehouse District. Festivities start at 9pm. I’ll be there with Jen to get my album for $10, (autographed I anticipate.) :)

Bec’s good friend, Née Née, and the group The Autumn Leaves will open.

So be there and join in the fun. There’ll sure to be another goober-album on the event and you don’t wanna let people see you weren’t celebrating with us.

If you want attention from the internet -- it must include cats.

Touché, I say.

Not to boast (‘kay, maybe a little), but I don’t get much interaction here on goobertech. I’m resigned to it. I know there are some loyal readers out there.

But the cat shaving story has elicited all kinds of attention. Yay! Three fellow myspacers have left their response and it’s much appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

And now MN Speaks has linked the article. Double yay!

Just a short entry to let everyone know that Kevin will be undergoing the bilateral bone marrow biopsy, bone scan, hip x-ray, and labs at Children’s on the 31st. This was the first day that worked with his class schedule and ability to coordinate all of the tests on the same day. Hopefully we will have results before we leave that afternoon. Only good ghosts and goblins bearing positive happy news will be allowed on this Halloween!

Shaving the cat's butt.

Our cat Jewely, (who’s a ninja when we’re not home), has giant fur-lumps on her back that are slowly taking over her entire body. It’s like petting a berber carpet. We joke and muse that she’s probably Jamaican and is just sporting her rasta heritage. No wonder she’s so laid back.

Well enoughs enough. Those lumps have gotta go. We tried this once back in February. (See the evidence.) I held the cat down while Jen wielded the razor and had at it. This lasted for about a half an hour before Jen’s and my hands looked like we’d stuck them in a thrashing machine. Sid was going berserk trying to free Jewely from the horrors happening in the kitchen and Mira was confused about whether we were helping or hurting the cat. We wisely gave up and decided that we should bring Jewely to the pet groomers. And now many months have gone by.

So what did I do on Sunday? Shaved the cat! read more »

Goddamn Internet Explorer's idiot CSS reasoning

Monday, October 15, 2007 - 3:42pm1 comment

I will cheer loudly the day Microsoft finally goes away bringing the god-awful Internet Explorer down with it. It’s been a sinking ship for the last few years anyway. Please people — for the love of sanity — abandon explorer and start using Firefox today. You won’t even notice the difference (other than you’ll have less ad/pop-up/virus/etc issues and things on the net will look better and you’ll surf faster and more efficiently.) read more »

The Decline of Our World -- Blog Action Day

Monday, October 15, 2007 - 12:05pm

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

Oct. 15th has been dubbed Blog Action Day, which means that bloggers worldwide are supposed to unite and take action by blogging about the environment today. No prob…

We’re all aware, I think, of our changing Earth. But it continually alarms me to here how much and how fast things have been changing lately. Here’re a few things I’ve recently read:

  • Melting Ice Caps — In the last thirty years, the Northern Ice Cap spanned from Canada to Finland. Today that has declined by 20%. Scientists predict extinction of the polar bear due to loss of habitat.
  • Rising Sea Levels — With the decline of the polar ice caps (north and south), oceans are raising at an ever faster rate. Coastal areas like Florida, New York City, Denmark and others would be reclaimed by the sea.

Hot Spot in the Hip

Saturday, October 13, 2007 - 12:07am

Kevin and I left at 5:45 this morning for the long commute to Children’s Hospital for his 3 month post treatment tests. The PET Scan was at Abbott. The CT Scan, labs, and Pulmonary Function Tests and visit with Dr. Bendel were all at Children’s. After the tests were all completed, we visited with Kevin’s friend, Heidi, who is in the midst of her heavy chemo treatments before receiving her stem cell transplant next week. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she battles the beasties this next month. With her indomitable spirit, I know she will prevail! read more »

Black Sheep

Thursday, October 11, 2007 - 11:22am

Baaa…aaa…! Baaaaaaa!

After doing all the creature creation for “Lord of the Rings” and “King Kong” with Peter Jackson, the Weta Workshop needed something a little more serious. Good thing Jonathan King came along with Black Sheep. :) Although “Black Sheep” may not have a line as cool as Samuel L. Jackson’s in “Snakes on a Plane”, the sock-puppet and heads-on-sticks cheese factor well makes up for it. Honestly though, when the Weta folk get involved in a low-budget horror romp — why wouldn’t you want to see it?

Sock puppet or Space Herpe?
“There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand… and they’re pissed off!”

Our action starts with the little fella to the left who looks like a cross between a mutated muppet and the space herpe. After biting the hippy’s ear off, it bites another sheep and the trouble begins. Apparently, one bite transfers the evilness werewolf style and the sickness quickly spreads to the rest of the herd. Meanwhile, the hippy is busy turning into a sheep himself. Weresheep — yay! In the words of the mad scientist of the film, “It looks like we’ve finally achieved spontaneous cellular transfer.” Perfect — sounds like the “Island of Dr. Moreau” to me. (Sadly, a film not yet in my collection. read more »

Road Construction, 35W-62 Interchange

Tuesday, October 2, 2007 - 2:35pm

The current state of failure
Traffic stopper at 35W & 62.

We drive through this mess each Sunday on our way to brunch. Each week, there’s more ripped apart and more orange cones set up. Lately, there’s the addition of large vertical steel beams in various locations between 35W south and Highway 62. I speculated that they must be creating a new overpass directly over the current interchange failure.

So what are they doing here? I wasn’t too far off in my guess. read more »

Freethinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs. This state of mind is not common, but it is essential for right thinking; where it is absent, discussion is apt to become worse than useless.
