In the hole

Monday, July 28, 2008 - 3:59pm

…Things will be a little tougher than I had hoped when I get out for another reason. I had planned on working at UNICOR until I got out. This would have allowed me to save another $1000 or so on top of the $1500 I’ve already got stashed. Due to unforeseen events in June (see below), that’s no longer possible. Now instead of making $200+ per month, I’m an orderly (janitor) in the unit I live in making $16.80 per month. Here’s what happened:

June 2nd, lunchtime
Out of 1100 people on the compound, 900 or so did not go to lunch. According to the BOP, this was a food strike. They locked the whole compound down for 3 days. I did not go eat. Not so much because I cared about the supposed issues the food strike was about, (I didn’t even know about it until just before it happened), I had laundry to do so was not going to go to lunch anyway. (I normally miss 2 or 3 meals a week.) Even if I had not had something else to do, I would not have gone though. I did not agree with the reasons for the strike, but I was not going to go against all of my friends and the people I live with. I did not think things would get as out of hand as they did. read more »

I come from the land down under

Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 9:54am2 comments

“How ya going, mate?!” No, I didn’t make a typo, that’s how Aussies ask, “How are you?” It has been an exhausting first week! It feels like I’ve been here forever yet it’s only been 10 days.

Let’s start at the beginning. After over 40 hours of traveling I finally made it to my bed in Fremantle. I left St. Cloud Friday morning around 9:00. I didn’t get to my room in Freo until 11:30 Sunday night. Everything was going on track until we get to L.A.. In LA, we find out two of the previous flights to Sydney were canceled (one because of a bomb threat and one because of engine failure). While this didn’t effect us at all (since our flight was already full) it made a difference in Sydney (more details in a bit). While waiting around for our six hour layover in Sydney, we found out that World Youth Day was currently going on in Sydney and that the pope would be talking only a few hours after we arrive in there. This means there was a ton of traffic coming into Sydney, in addition to 2 extra planes leaving LA within 30 mins of us to the same destination (the ones canceled earlier). When we arrived in Sydney around 6:00AM and our next plane to Freo left at 8:00. The 3 huge planes from LA was more than enough to clog the lines at customs and for transferring terminals. Needless to say we missed our flight and got booked for the next one leaving at 6:00PM. read more »

Lawn trolls blast biker and kill phone.

Saturday, July 26, 2008 - 4:26pm8 comments

Or something like that… Here’s my adventure from last night:

I get to Nyes and immediately the damn phone battery dies. OK, I was on the phone for a half hour, but still, the battery should last longer than that. Oh well — nothing a martini can’t solve.

So after another fun night at Nyes, I’m ready to bike home. After crossing the Hennepin bridge, I’m waiting at a light near Washington Ave and “SHPPPPSHHHHHHH” — now I’m soaking wet! A fucking automatic sprinkler head decided that a good time to poke it’s head out would be while I’m right next to it waiting at the light. And to make things even more awesome, this one is broken, so it sprays one large jet of water RIGHT ON ME.

Oh that’s great, I think as I pedal along dripping wet. My lower half looks like I fell in a lake. I get a block away and “phphhhhhhht” — flat tire. [insert long string of expletives here] I’m still 4 miles from home! So I had to walk the whole way, pushing my broken bike, dripping with water. :( read more »

The Clever Professor

Monday, July 21, 2008 - 10:40pm2 comments

Have you heard this one yet?

A student comes to a young professor’s office hours. She glances down the hall, closes his door, kneels pleadingly.

“I would do *anything* to pass this exam.” She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully
into his eyes.

“I mean…” she whispers, “…I would do…*anything*.”

He returns her gaze. “Anything?”

“*Anything*.”

His voice softens. “*Anything*??”

“*Anything*.” read more »

Naked Rollerblading Rodeo

Friday, July 18, 2008 - 9:39am3 comments

Who wants to go rollerblading this weekend?
I’ll bring the hat and rope. ;)

I do think knee and elbow pads might help a bit, though, don’t you think?

Ha — I love it, who comes up with these things. :)

Snoring Sid wakes the dead (or at least me)

Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 11:51am

I’m sure we all know that pugs snort, grunt, and snore. But Sid is actually pretty quiet in comparison to his mates. You see he had a little nip and tuck operation when he lost his boys. Thus opening his airways a bit and helping him breathe better.

But sometimes he’s loud as hell anyway. Last night certainly qualified — maybe it was the heat. I must’ve woke up at least 4 times to the sound of “snorRRRRRR… snorrrrRRRRR…” In which case it was a sharp smack on the wall to wake the poor little guy up and then hope I fell back asleep first. But of course, that plan never works. The snorer always manages to nod off before the victim.

While Sid snored away straight through to morning, I captured a bit of it with the voice recorder in my phone. Just so you can enjoy it to. :) Listen below…

Off to Australia

Monday, July 14, 2008 - 9:28pm

The countdown is on for the much anticipated study abroad to Australia. Kevin leaves this Friday and won’t be back until Dec. 9th. It is a challenge trying to cram 6 months worth of living into one suitcase and keep it under 50 lbs—thanks to the wonderful new rules/regulations the happy little airlines have created in the last few months.

Kevin had all of his heart, lung, and cancer scans/tests on July 3rd, and everything was clear!!! He has been in remission now for 1 year—he will be tested again when he comes back in Dec. He just received more immunizations and had more teeth fixed, so should be good to go. He will be posting some blogs from Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji Islands throughout the next months so everyone can keep up with his adventures.

Kevin’s friend, Heidi, whose brain cancer has returned for the 3rd time, is facing surgery on the l6th. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She has more then put in her time battling the beasties and deserves some good vibes coming her way. Enjoy the rest of the summer—don’t waste a moment!

Phoenix Mars Lander on Twitter

Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 4:37pm

It’s already old news that the Phoenix Mars Lander landed on Mars back on May 28th. But did you know it’s communicating via Twitter?

How incredibly clever! I love how it “talks” in first person. :)

Follow MarsPhoenix on Twitter yourself.

A few of my favs:

CONvergence 2008 wrap-up

Monday, July 7, 2008 - 7:27pm2 comments

Connie is the official
CONvergence mascot.

Okay - the influx of today’s traffic peeking at the goober-pics from this last weekend need no introduction. But the rest of you might. A “Con” is the term attached to various conventions or gatherings where likeminded people “converge” in one area and geek out to their particular fetish. Dragoncon and Comic-con are a couple of popular examples.

I’ve somehow remained blissfully ignorant of all this and since high-school have more or less abandoned my nerdlike demeanor, (although that might be hard to argue). Regardless, having no other plans for Independence Day, I followed my friend, Geoff’s, advice and attended CONvergence. This year was special because it was the 10 year anniversary of said Con and an extra day was added. So four days of geeking out and swilling alcohol — sounded like a fine time to me! :)

A few friends joined me and our posse hung out for most of the time. I was dually impressed with the level of effort that went behind the various party suites and costumes. It was like a four day Halloween party with the “trick-or-treats” being colorful shots of god knows what. :) :) Here are a few highlights that I enjoyed: read more »

Neighbor's Barking Dog from Hell

Thursday, July 3, 2008 - 12:44am1 comment

See the little fucker to the right? That’s my neighbor’s dog. The little shit is a Jack Russell Terrier that has no volume control or off switch. Whenever the damn thing is in the yard, it’s, “bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark bark…” until it goes back in. No exaggeration at all, it’s fucking constant.

So tonight…

That little beast has been yipping and yapping since 10:00. NON-STOP! It’s now 12:30 in the morning. Yay. And it’s still going strong. It’s probably a really good thing I don’t have my .22 handy.

Looking out the front window, I see the neighbor’s car isn’t there. (His absent status confirmed with no lights on in the house either). Well that’s just fucking wonderful. How thoughtful of you, neighbor, to leave the terrier terror out in the yard while you’re gone all night. read more »

Home from Spain - final update!

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 - 5:28am1 comment

The last two weeks of Spain were amazing! The second-to-last Wednesday me and seven other friends headed solo to the city of Valencia (a coastal city on the Mediterranean). Getting there was fun, seeing as though we didn’t have an advanced Spanish speaker with us, so we had to make-do with what little Spanish we knew. We took a 2 hour and 15 minute bus to Madrid then a 3 hour train ride to Valencia.

That Wednesday night, me and a friend stayed in one Hostel while the 6 others stayed in another (ours was cheaper). The next day, we all took an hour bus trip to Gandia. Gandia is claimed to be the “Orange County, California” part of Spain. It’s constantly humid, warm, and have incredible white sandy beaches. We all stayed at an oceanfront hotel. I got a room with a sea-side view and balcony. read more »

My camera is fancy and takes cool pics of you and all kinds of stuff. Look for your captured likeness in my gallery and peek at other victims of the camera’s flash.

Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notoroius. I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now on, I’ll be mad.
